Amanda has a passion for helping others articulate their stories. Her experience spans both marketing and communications, including positions at Deloitte and Ogilvy Public Relations, where she served clients in the professional services, technology and financial services industries. Most recently, Amanda led marketing for Deloitte’s Power & Utilities practice, developing and executing strategic marketing programs that raised the firm’s visibility and reputation in the market. At Akrete, Amanda helps her clients in the commercial real estate and architecture sectors develop compelling narratives and amplify their reach.


Q&A with Amanda Hargrove

What is your favorite part of working in PR?

You are always learning something new through clients. You get exposure to really smart and intelligent people and experts in their field, and get to see the ways they think. You really get to stay on top of what’s happening in the business world and help these people communicate these stories.

If you could drink with anyone from history who would it be?

I’d love to sit down with Michelle Obama. I have so much respect for her and want to hear how she’s balanced everything as a mother and a leader.  I’d also love to ask her how she keeps their family real, despite how famous they are.

What do you do when you are facing a creative block? 

I try to change the way I’m approaching a situation. So if I’m sitting at my laptop and have no idea what to write, I will get a notebook or a stack of Post Its. It’s helps me by physically changing the way I’m looking at the problem.

One piece of advice you would offer to someone trying to enter the PR industry?

Read as much as you can- always. Also, in PR, you work with so many people who are master communicators.  You should watch and pay attention to everything they say and write because no matter where you go in your career, that will help you.

How long have you been working in PR?

I started working in PR in 2004 and a few years later I moved into marketing, but returned to the PR side. I like focusing on the storytelling aspect, so sometimes that’s PR and sometimes that’s marketing. I like having the flexibility to do both.

How would you describe working for a large PR Firm compared to one like Akrete?

I’ve worked at a large PR firms – huge companies like Deloitte, and then Akrete. I think there are advantages in working at all sizes and I would recommend working at all different sizes. What I like about Akrete is I get to focus on the work itself without all of the organizational politics.

What is a song to describe your work ethic?

“Go Big or Go home,” by the American Authors. I think if you’re going to do something, go all the way. In work, I don’t do things half way.

What do you like to do in your spare time? Hobbies? etc… 

I have two young boys, so a lot of my spare time is spent hanging out with them and my husband. We love going to the lakefront, riding bikes and enjoying the community. I also love reading and baking.

What is your favorite book? 

I could never name one book. I love reading stories that take me to another time and place. I like reading Jane Austen. Another book that’s always stood out to me is “Snow Flower and the Secret Fan,” by Lisa See.

What are three interesting facts about you?

  1. I swam with dolphins in Tahiti on my honeymoon.
  2. When I was in high school I was a competitive baton twirler.
  3. I once worked in the Empire State Building.

Quote you live by and why?

“Attitude is everything.” I really believe that so much that happens to you in life is out of your control. It’s how you react to it that really makes a difference.
