Economic Development

Economic Development PR: Your community’s promise, articulated

We tell the story of your community so it resonates inside and out. Building stronger neighborhoods, cities, states and provinces starts with forging relationships between stakeholders from the public sector, private capital, local business owners and associations, the development industry and financial institutions. Our PR programs can boost your visibility to investment decision-makers, consultants and corporate executives who can bring jobs and other economic benefits to your city, state, county or region.

Each player has unique drivers that capture their interest and their investment. We dig deep with you to uncover those differentiated messages and craft them into compelling content for the media; white papers, e-books and thought leadership; conferences and meetings; video, digital and physical marketing materials and more.

Our breadth of experience working with companies in commercial real estate, financial services and small business investment gives us an eye into your potential partners and an understanding of the complexity and coordination required to drive economic development.

Our experience includes representing the economic development ministry of Canada’s Province of Ontario for nearly a decade. Our firm helped Ontario connect with U.S. investors and corporate site selection consultants through a robust thought leadership and communications program designed to support economic development objectives. Team Akrete has also worked with the New Zealand Trade and Enterprise organization and with site selectors, ghostwriting and publicizing JLL Consulting and others in this space.

Our CEO, Margy Sweeney, leads our partnership with Area Development Magazine to bring high quality public relations services to economic development organizations and those who serve them. As a member of the magazine’s editorial board, Sweeney is a regular host of the “Overtime” video segment within the popular Consultant’s Forum series.  Her interviews with top global site selection consultants connect economic developers with the consultants who bring potential major job-producing opportunities to communities across the U.S. and Canada.

Sweeney volunteers her time to multiple community organizations promoting diversity and economic opportunity.  She is the Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of SomerCor, an SBA Certified Development Corporation, and a Board Director of the Illinois Manufacturing Excellence Council (IMEC). She also serves as the Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Drawbridge Community Revitalization Foundation and a member of the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO); Commercial Real Estate Executive Women (CREW) and Illinois Women in Cannabis (more information on Akrete’s cannabis practice can be found here.)
