Craig was one of the most patient, smart and creative people I’ve had the good fortune to know. I’ll never forget the day he blew my mind by telling me he was in a Tom Petty cover band. Here was this guy who I knew mostly in business and our conversations were mostly about real estate. And then there’s the whole other, super-fun side to him. It taught me to always dig deeper and get to know the sides of people that maybe they don’t present right away—it’s worth the effort. And it’s a great lesson that has stayed with me.

Since Craig and I met in the mid-1990s, we swam in the same waters professionally, and grew to be personal friends. He was a reporter I pitched, a client I served, a collaborator and key member of my team as my business grew, ruthless editor and commiserator extraordinaire. Most of all, I’m proud to have called him a mentor and a friend.
Craig included this in a Q&A with him on our Akrete website. It explains how his moral compass was always so on-point:
“I really try to live by the Golden Rule.  But I also think often of the Serenity Prayer: ‘God give me the serenity to accept what I can’t change, the strength to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.’ Life is a lot less stressful if we can filter out the anxieties that we can’t do anything about.”

RIP, Craig. You will be sorely missed.

With a heavy heart, Margy & Team Akrete

Akrete’s clients are shaping tomorrow’s workplaces—and they’re doing it today. Individuals in the modern workforce naturally move toward companies that hold the same values that they cherish in their own personal lives and boast workplace cultures reflective of their individual image and lifestyles. When looking for new cities and facilities to relocate to, corporations are starting to follow the same thinking, and real estate investors are choosing the locations, and creating the environments, that attract and retain talent.

Last month, VF Corporation, the North Face parent company and global leader in outdoor apparel, pinpointed the city of Denver and Akrete client Bentall Kennedy’s LEED Gold Certified building (pictured above) as the perfect embodiments of its corporate values and culture.

In planting itself in a progressive, green-centric city like Denver, VF is firmly rooting itself quite literally in sustainability, and bullishly projecting long-term growth for not only their outdoor brands; but for an outdoor, eco-conscious culture to continue to find new peaks in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains.

At a recent lunch event hosted by Akrete client SIOR Chicago, Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner seemed to think so. In conversation with David Kahnweiler, SIOR, Non-Executive Chairman at Colliers, Rauner discussed the successes of his first term and his plans for a second term—including policies that would make Illinois a business destination in the Midwest.
